TAWAU: Fifty petty traders in Kampung Titingan near here have lost their source of income when their shops and business stalls were destroyed in a fire early today.

However, there was no report of any casualty in the fire which destroyed 16 wooden shops and 34 stalls.

Officer-in-charge of the Tawau fire and rescue station, Albert Jiran Tanjung, when met at the scene, said 16 firemen with two fire engines and two multi-purpose vehicles were sent to the scene after receiving a distress call at 1.40am.

“When the firemen arrived, the shops and stalls were already engulfed in flames," he added.

He said investigation was being carried out to determine the cause of the fire and losses incurred.

Meanwhile, Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) president, Ismail Mayakub, advised owners of the affected shops and stalls to obtain permission from the council to rebuild the building and structures.

Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Taufiq Abu Bakar Titingan, who also visited the scene, advised the land owners to draw up a development plan if they intended to allow the traders to continue to operate their businesses at the site.

Tawfiq, who is also Tawau Umno leader, said he would look into the form of assistance to be given to the victims in the fire. - BERNAMA
