MELBOURNE: Eleven Malaysians and a Chinese were arrested for working illegally when Australian immigration officers raided a popular Malaysian restaurant in the Glen Waverly suburb.
Compliance officers from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and Victoria Police raided the unnamed eatery during the busy Friday night dinner rush.
In a statement, a DIAC spokesman said the arrests were believed to be the largest number of illegal workers nabbed in a single operation.
"Those detained included cooks, kitchen hands, waiters and waitresses. Eleven had overstayed their visas while another was working in breach of his visa conditions, and had his visa cancelled," he said. The 12 were transferred to the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre here for deportation. - Bernama
