GEORGE TOWN: Youth and Sports Ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Salim Parlan claimed trial to committing khalwat (close proximity) with a woman believed to be his personal assistant.
Salim, 51, was charged with committing the offence with Nur Diayana Norslan, 30, during a raid conducted by the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department and the police in a room at a hotel in Batu Ferringhi at 5am last Saturday.
He was charged under Section 27(a) of the Penang Syariah Criminal Enactment 1996 while Nur Diayana was charged under Section 27(b) of the enactment.
Nur Diayana also claimed trial to the charge at a Syariah Court here. If convicted, each of them could be fined up to RM3,000 or jailed not more than two years or both.
Syariah Lower Court judge Nik Bukhari Hashimy Nik Yahya set June 20 for mention and set bail at RM2,000 in one surety.
Counsel Wan Faridulhadi Mohd Yusoff proposed that Salim's “first wife” be allowed to post bail but Nik Bukhari Hashimy allowed a friend of Salim to post bail.
State Syariah prosecution chief Mohd Zulkhairi Aziz said he would call four witnesses to testify. - theStarOnline
