American contends they’re married and wants access to son

PUTRAJAYA: An American businessman contended that he “married” a Malaysian woman in Las Vegas. The woman, however, said it was merely a pledge of love.
They have an 11-year-old son who has been adopted by a Muslim couple.
The 44-year-old American is now seeking access to the boy, such as the chance to see him during school holidays for two weeks, and free and unrestricted communication via telephone, email and Skype.
According to the court’s written judgment, the businessman met the woman, now 46, in December 1998 when he was in Malaysia.
The following year, she visited him in the United States where they “married” in a church in Las Vegas.
Later, she returned to Malaysia while the businessman remained in the United States.
On March 21, 2000 in Kuala Lumpur, the woman gave birth to a boy who was given a Christian name followed by a Chinese name.
She met the businessman while estranged from her Malaysian husband, with whom she had a daughter.
At the time, she was also living with a Dutch national and had a son with him.
She had the affair with the American while still living with the Dutch national and had named him the father of the boy she gave birth to in 2000.
Although the American insisted that they went through a marriage ceremony in Las Vegas, she described it as more of a pledge of love in an informal setting, which was a prelude to a formal wedding in Malaysia in the future.
In September 2004, the businessman engaged the services of a solicitor to set up a maintenance scheme for the boy. - theStarOnline
