NILAI: Timely intervention by police prevented over a thousand foreign workers from starting a riot at a factory here early this morning.
It is learnt that the Bangladeshi and Vietnamese workers of textile plant Recron (M) Sdn Bhd were ready for battle' armed with iron rods and pieces of wood.
The police had to close several roads at the Nilai Industrial Park and Taman Semarak near the factory and workers' hostel.
The workers had refused to put down their weapons despite repeated warnings by the police.
Instead, they continued to taunt one another until police and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) reinforcements arrived.
Local residents were advised to remain indoors as tension heightened.
It could not be immediately established why the workers rioted but witnesses said it could be due to “personal problems”.
Malaysian workers of the factory, which is one of the biggest in the state, were also shaken by the incident.
“This happens all the time but today's episode is a nightmare.
“We never knew there was so much animosity between them and they were armed and ready for battle,” said a worker. - theStarOnline
