It’s a long-awaited piece of good news for the gays and lesbians in New York.
Same-sex marriage has just been legalised in the American city following Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s signing into law a gay marriage bill that was narrowly passed by state lawmakers Friday.
New York becomes the sixth state in America after Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the Washington capital district that allows same-sex couples to wed. It’s also the biggest by far, being the third most populous state in the country.
It marks a significant victory for gay rights activists, who are now hoping that this will trigger a ripple effect across the nation in granting marriage equality for homosexuals.
Empire State Pride Agenda executive director Ross Levi said: "Once this is signed into law, the population of the United States living under marriage equality doubles. That's certainly going to have a ripple effect across the nation. It's truly a historic night for love, our families, and democracy."
