GEORGE TOWN: State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ayub Yaakob (pic) has been warded at the Penang Hospital after he fell into a manhole at the hospital.
State CID chief SAC Zahruddin Abdullah said DCP Ayub had gone to the specialist clinic at noon yesterday to seek treatment for his fever.
“He was walking along the hospital's corridor towards the restroom outside the clinic when he fell into the uncovered manhole,” he said. “DCP Ayub did not see the 1.2m diameter manhole as it was blocked by a row of benches,” said SAC Zahruddin, adding that construction work was going on in the area.
There were no signages to indicate repair work was in progress.
DCP Ayub sustained injuries to his right leg and left rib.
He is expected to be in hospital for two days, SAC Zahruddin told The Star.
State Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh expressed disappointment over the mishap.
“This is not the first time this has happened at the hospital,” he said, adding that action would be taken against the contractor for failing to abide by the standard operating procedures (SOP) when carrying out repair works. - theStarOnline
