PETALING JAYA: He claims to be Captain America, but he is no hero to the folk here. He goes around smashing car windscreens in neighbourhoods.
The mentally unstable man had his victims fuming when he left notes on the damaged cars, signing off as “Captain America, defender of justice and meritocracy, the American way”.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said police were alerted after eight similar police reports were lodged since March.
“We learnt the culprit rode a motorcycle in the early morning and randomly targeted cars parked by the side of the road,” he told pressmen after attending the Petaling Jaya police headquarters monthly assembly yesterday.
In most cases, the victims did not realise there was a note left in the car until they came to the police station to lodge a report.
“After conducting surveillance and intelligence gathering, we located the culprit and arrested him in Damansara on Sunday,” he said.
ACP Arjunaidi said police found that he had a history of mental illness.
One of the suspect's latest victims, teacher Mohammad Salleh Manan, 55, said his car window was smashed at around 3am on Aug 20. When he peeped out of his house window, he saw a man on a motorcycle speeding away.
“When I went out to check the extent of the damage, I found a hole on my car window.
“I only noticed the note signed by Captain America' when I took the car to the police station to lodge a report later that day,” he said.
ACP Arjunaidi said police were waiting for a court order to send the suspect for a psychological evaluation. - theStarOnline
