BEHRANG: Four people, including two students from SMK Air Merah, Kulim, died after the chartered bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a sand-laden trailer here.
They were on their way from Kulim to Kuala Lumpur when their bus overturned and was rammed by a trailer at KM382 of the North-South Expressway here at about 4.20am Friday.
Acting Tanjung Malim OCPD Supt Md Tahir Kasim said the bus was travelling with 36 students and three teachers. There were two drivers on board.
Initial investigations show that the driver lost control of the bus, swung to the left side of the road and overturned. A trailer then rammed into the bus.
He said the deceased have been identified as Form Three students Khairul Anuar Azhan and Maysara Zaidi, both 15 and teacher Siti Hajar Mohamad, 33.
Alor Teja Wanita Umno branch chief Basarah Saad, 45, a passenger from another bus who stopped to help was also killed when the trailer rammed the overturned bus.
He added that 22 victims received outpatient treatment at the Slim River Hospital while five with serious injuries had been warded.
Supt Md Tahir said the bus driver and driver of the trailer had been detained to assist in investigations.
Biology teacher Azria Hani, 31, said the group had left Kulim at 11.30pm on Thursday on what was supposed to be a three-day trip to Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands.
Form Three student Mohd Shah Redzuan Samsudin, who suffered a broken arm, said that those in the bus were only slightly injured when the bus overturned.
"But when the trailer rammed into us, I saw my schoolmates being thrown out of the bus.
"There was blood everywhere and people were moaning in pain," he said. - theStaronline
