KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife died from severe burns while her husband is in critical condition after their kitchen caught fire at the Desa Rejang flats.
In the freak accident, Tuty Suriaty Manan, 34, succumbed to burns to 95% of her body.
Her husband Raja Basir Ali Peerbux, 56, suffered burns to his face, legs and hands during the incident at their 15th floor unit.
Setapak Fire and Rescue Department fire station received the distress call at about 1.30pm.
“When we arrived at the scene, the fire had already been extinguished, and Tuty was found unconscious in the hall while her husband was lying outside the flat unit,” department chief Suki Annuar said.
He said both Tuty and Raja Basir were rushed to Hospital Kuala Lumpur. However, she was pronounced dead at around 5pm.
The cause of fire is being investigated.
Neighbour Normah Talib, 44, said she rushed out of her home when she heard cries for help.
“When I reached their front door, I saw Tuty lying on the floor with severe burns on her face.
“Her husband, who was about to come out of the bedroom, was writhing in pain from the burns sustained while trying to save his wife,” she said, adding that she wrapped both victims in wet blankets before rescuers arrived. - theStarOnline
