|The novel Konserto Terakhir has gone through the process of selection and screening.|
Education director-general Datuk Seri Abd Ghafar Mahmud, in a statement yesterday, said the textbook replacement would be for students in Zone Two, covering Negri Sembilan, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, and Selangor.
Konserto Terakhir is a story of a village boy who migrated to the city and became an independent and respected musician.
The novel was already included in the syllabus for Form 5 students in Zone Two from 2000 to last year.
Abdullah Hussain, 91, was awarded the National Laureate in 1996 and has published 25 books, with Interlok being his last.
Ghafar said the cabinet had, at its Dec 14 meeting, agreed to exclude Interlok as a textbook after it received criticisms from certain segments of society.
The decision was made to avoid parties continuing to make it a controversial issue.
He said Konserto Terakhir had gone through the process of selection and screening and was found to be suitable as a school literature textbook.
Gabungan Penulis Nasional said despite its views on Interlok -- that it was a literary work and that it should remain as a textbook -- Konserto Terakhir was an important work of literature in Malay Language.
"It tells the story about society and is embedded with positive values which can be beneficial to students." - NST
